SIRE, si j'ay dormi durant quarante ans, que j'ay eu cet honneur d'auoir serui en ma charge vos predecesseurs Roys, & à présent vostre Majesté: ç'a esté les yeux ouuerts pour me resoudre de plus en plus sur les difficultez de ceste science, par la lecture des bons au-theurs & pratique des antiens, outre ce que j'y ay apporté par mon estude & labeur. Et d'autant que ceste science faisant partie des Mathematiques, est demonstratiue & tres-certaine, il est impossible qu'elle ne produise d'admirables effects, & plus grands queles histoires le sçauroyent representer, laissant à part les merueilles que les Poëtes nous en racontent. Neantmoins plusieurs se meslent de la traicter auec confusion si grande (s'appuyans de quelques reigles communes & vulgaires qui seruent de bien peu à la vraye harmonie) qu'il semble que pour ce subjetell ait esté mesprisée. Non que j'aye en cela intention de m'atribuer aucun merite que de mon labeur, mais seulement qu'elle soit plus dignement recogneuë d'vn chacun, & que pour cet effect les professeurs prennent garde d'y apporter les raisons & considerations requises à vne telle science. C'est donc en quoy, SIRE, ce long sommeil m'a beaucoup aydé, duquel qussi je tire ce contentement d'auoir reserué l'exposition de mes oeuures, jusques à ce siecle rempli de tant de doctes & judicieux personnages, & qui plus est soubs le regne du plus grand Roy de la terre: Ayant ce bon heur de luy dedier auec le tres-humble seruice que je luy dois, ce premier liure de Motets que j'aduance comme pour arres de mes autres labeurs. Que s'il est fauorisé d'vn si grand Monarque, l'autheur sera d'autant plus encouragé d'employer le reste de ses jours à ce penible trauail, à la gloire de Dieu & pour le service de vostre Majesté, que ir souhaite d'estre toujours maintenuë en toute prosperité & santé, demeurant à jamais, SIRE, vostre tres-humble & tres-obeissant subiect & seruiteur, EVSTACHE DV CAVRROY.
